Preface: Thursday’s #DWHabit prompt, cushion, inspired this ode to cushions. Ironically Thursday was yet another snow day off from school here in the northeast and I’m spending far too much time with cushions. Oh, soft cloud of comfort.
You enabler of substandard behavior —
Slothful, sluggish, shiftless.
Your pleasingly plump presentation might fool some, but not I.
Yes, you distract the eye with your rich brocade facade.
Your delicate stitching and seamless seams.
But your plentiful piping is all a ruse.
When the snow begins to fall yet again,
And the phone call comes to bid me a safe snow day in my humble abode,
You lure me in.
Calling to me to rest just a while.
But it’s never just a while, is it?
“You have books to read and slices to write. Why not do them here?
Let me ease your burden.
Shoveling can wait. Laundry can wait. Dishes can wait.”
Oh, you cogent cushion.

Ha! I love this personification of this cushion! It does lure you in, away from the pressing responsibilities! You use language so well. I feel like you’re having this conversation directly with the pillow- especially when you say, “but it’s never just a while, is it?” I will be shaking my fist at my cushion as I pass it while cleaning today!

This is wonderful, Christie! That “rich brocade fabric” is alluring, not to mention gorgeous! I’m all for doing work in comfort. The laundry and dishes can wait!

How I relate to this – looks like you may be stuck next to that “brocade” again on Tuesday.

Such a fun point of view from an object we so often completely overlook. This certainly fit the bill for you this week!

This is great, Christie! I love all the consonance and assonance, and your word choice is superb.

Christie, I am finding that the lure of writing is comforting while the household duties are on hold just like you. Glad to have a co-conspirator as a writing friend. The alliteration is strong in your poem.
