Is This Normal or Not? You be the judge! #SOLC18

Note: This graphic was from last night. As of this AM, our snow totals have risen from 8-14″ to 12-24″!

One of our local radio stations here in Boston has a very silly weekly “Is This Normal or Not?” feature where listeners call in with their (or a family member’s) odd foible, routine, or superstition. The three afternoon hosts listen to the caller and then each way in with “Normal” or “Not Normal!” I’ve often thought about calling in about my preparing-for-a-snow-day routine, which I had to go through yet again yesterday afternoon as we braced ourselves for our third nor’easter in less than three weeks and our fourth snow day of the year.

So, dear readers, you get to be my “Is This Normal or Not?” judges today. Let me know what you think. My afternoon-evening  prep includes:

  • filling the gas tank all the way until it’s full, no matter how much was already in there
  • backing in cars (not pulled in) and putting wipers up
  • purchasing Kraft Mac and Cheese, a bag of Twizzlers, and a box of microwave popcorn
  • brewing a large pot of coffee and storing in every Thermos I can get my hands on
  • popping the microwave popcorn (in case we lose power)
  • making the Mac and Cheese (same reason!)
  • showering (just in case)
  • washing any laundry (just in case, even if I just did it the day before)
  • plugging in all the chargeable flashlights
  • charging all phones, laptops, iPads
  • lining up all candles and matches
  • clearing open farmer’s porch of anything not involved in snow removal (shovels, ladders, roof rake, ice melt)
  • topping off bird feeders

Needless to say I was exhausted before I went to bed last night. So, dear readers…

  1. That’s a lot of prep and a lot of snow forecasted. We are on our third snow day in less than a week but only predicted to get 5-8. Is that normal? To feel like that’s just a dusting? Good luck with today’s storm.

  2. I agree with Christine above – that many blizzards in March – that is WHACKED! And it must mess with your whole emotional being. March means spring! This is the stuff of January. I do feel for you. We had a crazy winter many years ago, and the memory of it is still very real. The snow began in October, and we didn’t see the ground until April. Hang in there!! Your preparations will pay off I am sure.

  3. This is a funny post – enjoyed reading it. I would lean a little more on the side of not normal, but I live in Virginia and we very rarely get much snow. So I am not a good judge of how prepared one should be for a blizzard!

  4. Your shopping list made me chuckle. I can’t imagine the onslaught of snow you’ve gotten! Sounds like you have prep down to a science. Mac n cheese and all. I would say it’s your “new” normal. Lol

  5. I love it Christie! I’ve been watching and thinking of you and others in the path of this third storm… I love your preparedness! As sure as you do, you don’t need… as sure as you don’t, you do need. So I always (most of the time) opt to do.

  6. This was a great post that made me smile! I would like to think that being located in upstate NY I would be as prepared as you were but my list was much shorter. My question to you is do your neighbors know how prepared you are for these snowstorms? If so I was wondering if you get lots of visitors on these snowy days.

  7. Sounds like you know how to prep! I love that you included topping off birdfeeders – how kind of you! We had a big storm out in the Midwest this winter (nothing like what’s happening there, and I don’t mean it to sound like it), and I bought the strangest things from the store for myself. I will have to remember your plan. I think I bought lots of candy…

  8. I definitely thought of you yesterday when I was trying to figure out if I could travel to Albany for our statewide conference. Many weather reports later, I decided not to go. I think all you did was the NEW NORMAL for the Northeast!

  9. Normal! LOL maybe lining up the candles and matches is a little over the top… I do the whole back the car in and lift the windshield wipers up. We don’t own a microwave (so how normal are we?) Well, come to think of it – what’s normal anyway? Nice piece!
