Your teaser line grabbed me. I can so relate to your poem on this last day of July!

This sums up how so many of us feel about July! We have two birthdays at the end of the month which cause us to have even more mixed feelings 🙂

The phrase “…the cruel mirror image” captures the foreboding of August so well! Yes, we need July to linger…hard to say goodbye to it. Thanks for sharing!

This is a perfect poem for the day – it applies to parents as well as educators, with the rush of a new school year rolling around again. Not to mention the “cruel” heat of August; I’m in North Carolina and the word I used most recently to describe August temperature is “brutal.” I especially like that the poem ended not with the end, but with beginnings … it is hopeful.

I agree with Fran…perfect poem for today!
I am having that push pull feeling with July myself.

I love the juxtaposition of the two summer months. While their length is the same, the sultry bliss paints such an inviting time, whereas the “sweltering afternoons” depict quite the opposite feeling. Here’s to finding a balance between relaxation and readiness! Great to meet you IRL at Heinemann Teacher Tour Saturday!

My thoughts exactly, Christie! But even though I’ll miss summer’s relaxed schedule, I still look forward to the start of school.
