Each day during April, I will write a poem-ish piece inspired by the avian world. I have left my challenge open so that the poems may take any form — haiku, free verse, borrowed line, blackout — and who knows which direction they will go in.

It’s Poetry Friday and Tabatha Yeatts is hosting this second roundup of National Poetry Month on her blog, The Opposite of Indifference. Tabatha’s NPM project celebrates words from around the world, and she’s collecting short dual language poems. I hope you will stop by her site to read a poem or two, or offer one up yourself! Day #9: Two Birds Perch (haiku)

A peek at my process — My husband and I began collecting antique Japanese woodblock prints a few years back. Ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world,” often depict landscapes or nature scenes. Birds are a frequent subject. This particular print spoke to me for several reasons, one of which was the birds themselves. How lucky for them that they will spend the rest of their days surrounded by the beauty of spring.

Participants in the Poetry Friday community have launched the 9th annual Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem originally organized by author/poet, Irene Latham. Margaret Simon at Reflections on the Teche took over last year as the organizer and the poem returns to the Bayou Teche for a visit today, as it is Margaret’s turn to choose a line from two gifted to her by Denise Krebs.
