Each day during April, I will write a poem-ish piece inspired by the avian world. I have left my challenge open so that the poems may take any form — haiku, free verse, borrowed line, blackout — and who knows which direction they will go in.

Day #12: Science and Art Collide (concrete or shape poem)

A peek at my process — I am constantly astounded at the skill and craftsmanship with which birds build their nests. Have you ever examined an abandoned nest closely? I have so many questions for their designers and builders! How do they know where to build them? Where do they get their materials? Nests play such an important role in the lives of birds, yet they are truly works of art. Because the image of a nest was critical, a concrete poem felt just right for my words today. I intentionally left the word nest out of my poem, because I could hear Kwame Alexander’s voice in my head reminding me to “show, don’t tell!”

Margaret Simon at Reflections on the Teche took over last year as the organizer. Poet Janet Fagel takes over today, choosing a line from two gifted to her by Buffy Silverman.
