#PoetryFriday #PoemsforMaryLee #MarvelousMaryLee

Gosh! I’ve never had to keep a surprise this long! Now it’s finally time.

(A little early for our friends across the globe to join in the fun!)

SURPRISE, MARY LEE!

Are you ready? Because we are definitely going to be doing some celebrating this Poetry Friday. I’m beyond thrilled to be playing host to this special gathering, with hugs and support from Irene Latham. And it’s my birthday today, so let’s have some cake!

True confession! I’ve been a Mary Lee fangirl for a while. Yup! I have! And we can thank Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong for bringing us “together” through their Poetry Friday Anthologies. We’ve never met in person — missed my chance at my one and only NCTE in Baltimore 2019 — but as an educator who believes poetry can and should be incorporated into every school day of the year and across the curriculum, Mary Lee is someone I have looked up to for quite some time. Her poems reveal so much to me about her, her interests, teaching style, and much more. Here are two of my teaching favorites.

From The Poetry Friday Anthology For Celebrations, compiled by Vardell and Wong, Pomelo Books, 2015.

My Kindergarten poets have enjoyed using Earth, You Are as a mentor text to inspire their own poems, swapping in and out what they love about mighty Mother Earth.

From The Poetry Friday Anthology for Science: Poems for the School Year Integrating Science, Reading, and Language Arts, compiled by Vardell and Wong, Pomelo Books, 2014.

Pumpkin Experiment is fun AND informative and so me! You had me at “land lab,” Mary Lee. Be still my science geeky heart! And that repeating line, “in the land lab–,” again is a perfect mentor text. SWOON! Over decomposing pumpkins! Every October, after celebrating pumpkin math and science, my Kindergarteners and I process out to our equivalent land lab to deposit our pumpkins and Mary Lee’s poem comes along for the ride.

I could go on and on all day with more adoration for Mary Lee and her craft, but I can’t wait to hear what everyone else has for Mary Lee Show and Tell!

So………

Heartfelt congratulations on 37 amazing years in education, Mary Lee. What lucky, lucky students you have nurtured, and how lucky we are to know you — in person or on the page. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you.

Just click HERE to add your link and we’ll get this party started!

And lastly, some fun news…I am very excited to be leading the month-long “Playing with Poetry” course this July for Teach Write. If you know of any teachers who are interested in learning how to incorporate more poetry into their classroom lives throughout the year (or if you are!), I’d love to have them (or you) join me! 1. Adoration, indeed! Thank you for hosting this very special Friday that we celebrate a friend of ours, a friend of poetry. I don’t mind if I do take a nibble of chocolate cake and a sip of bubbly. A career like Mary Lee’s that shines so bright around the world is worth celebrating! I too found a classic Mary Lee poem and wrote in response. Let’s party!

  10. So much to love here! Since I came into this community a while back, Mary Lee has been an encourager, commenter, source of great poetry, and all around good person. Many others have, as well, but not many at her level. Thank you, Christie, for celebrating her! To celebrate you too, Happy Birthday!

  11. Happy Birthday, and congrats on the poetry course gig! I’ll pass that on to the teachers I know, but first I want to say thank you for spreading poetry to kids, every day. I was that kid who lived for poetry, and could never get enough. As for Mary Lee, well, marvelous doesn’t BEGIN to cover it, but I’ve tried to capture my thoughts in a poem for her on my blog. Thank you for hosting such an amazing party!

  14. Christie, Thank you for hosting! And, Mary Lee – Congratulations on your retirement! I can bet you’ll keep writing these wonderful poems inspired by nature, though! I love all the examples offered today of Mary Lee’s poetry. As a person also inspired by nature, I love how she captures its essence! I also love how she shares what she’s observed in the classroom through her poetry as well! If there were one book of hers you could recommend, which would it be and why? Thanks! I think I need to add to my poetry collection! Thanks, again!

I raise my glass to toast marvelous Mary Lee! I don’t have a blog post today, but my co-blogger Esther Hershenhorn shared an excerpt from Amy Ludwig VanDerwater’s wonderful Write! Write! Write! in tribute to Mary Lee.

  17. Oh such a wonderful way to honor a teacherpoetperson like Mary Lee Hahn. How she has touched lives both near and far. Her poetry is carved out of her keen observation and deep heart of caring about the earth and life and awareness. A beautiful tribute and glad you are the host Christie. What a wonderful Poetry Friday. And a BIG Happy Birthday Wish or 10 to you! Make it a week-long celebration. Love your summer course. I would love to take it but not sure I can fit it all in.

  20. Christie — belated birthday wishes! Kudos to all who kept this a surprise…I was TOTALLY surprised! The hardest part was catching wind of all this in the morning, then having to teach all day, then throwing my luggage and fishing gear in the car and driving to the CfR Alumni retreat. You threw a party, but I didn’t have the day off to enjoy it! I guess that means I’ll just savor all the love in the coming days. Thank you, thank you, thank you to ALL!

  21. Happy birthday, Christie, and what a lovely celebration for Mary Lee. I love the poems that you shared. They make wonderful mentor texts and serve as a reminder that poetry is everywhere–especially, perhaps, in the land lab. Even though I only know Mary Lee from Poetry Friday, I feel honored and inspired by her. And I’m so grateful for this group.
