Words Take Wing #PoetryFriday #NikkiGrimes

Happy Poetry Friday, everyone! Irene Latham is hosting this week’s festive gathering on her blog, Live Your Poem. Won’t you join us there? This week we are celebrating the one and only Nikki Grimes and her amazing accomplishments. If you don’t follow Nikki on Twitter (@nikkigrimes9), you are missing out. Her words are uplifting and always inspiring. And her recent memoir in poems, Ordinary Hazards, is on top of my summer stack waiting for me one week from today when my school year FINALLY wraps up.

If you are new to Poetry Friday and are ever wondering where to find the weekly host of the roundup, you’ll find a list of hosts and their blog links here.

The inspiration for my poem is Nikki’s fabulous verse novel Words with Wings and it’s heroine, Gabby. I threw out “words with wings” to my Kindergarten poets, and one astute young naturalist/writer said words having wings reminded him of dandelion seeds floating in the air. His image served as the seed for my poem.

Words take wingMany thanks to Irene for hosting this most joyous of roundups, and for all of Nikki’s words that have taken wing and flown into our hearts. Be well, friends!

Day 2: Paint Chip Tanka #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM

PLAYING WITH POETRY (1)

Poetry Month is finally here! My #NaPoWriMo Poem-A-Day project is Playing With Poetry. I am tagging along with Margaret Simon, Jone MacCulloch, and Mary Lee Hahn. We will be playing with Haikubes, Magnetic Poetry, Metaphor Dice, and Paint Chip Poetry (I raided Home Depot).  I’m even throwing in nail polish color names as inspiration, just for fun! Play along, if you’d like! We are using the Twitter hashtag #playwithpoetryNPM to see what poetic mischief everyone is getting into.

Today’s playful poetic offering is a paint chip-inspired tanka (5/7/5/7/7). I love the color green and am always amazed at the number of shades there are and their creative names. For more background information on the tanka form, click here.

Today our poetry pal from Down Under, Kat Apel, dives in. I’m excited to provide the 14th line on Sunday, April 14th. I hope you’ll join us to see what happens! Here’s the itinerary for the poem.

Back to nature

Longing for soft buttercups

The garden fairy

And fern canopies

Beyond the garden wall

On this rainy afternoon

Filled with gray mist

From a spring storm

How can this be? #SOLC19

This is the final post in the annual month-long Slice of Life writing challenge organized by Two Writing Teachers. It was my third year of Slicing in the challenge. Gratitude to Beth, Betsy, Deb, Kathleen, Kelsey, Lanny, Melanie, and Stacey for all their organizing and commenting magic. If you want to take a peek at the Padlet of writing ideas I’ve continued to add to throughout the challenge, you’ll find it here. I hope to see you on Tuesdays for the weekly SOL, and daily if you are participating in National Poetry Writing Month (#NaPoWriMo), which launches tomorrow.

How can this be? 31 days have come and gone in a flash. We’ve been flexing our writing muscles, looking for those small moments each and every day. It’s funny how in the beginning I had to search for them. But now they drift in on the wind, ready to be captured and shared on (virtual) paper with the world — or at least a few of its residents. Let’s continue to share slices on Tuesdays, shall we?

Commenting is writing, too! How easy it is to forget that. Thank you to all of you who wondered and wandered a bit with me this month, and for taking a few moments to “like” and comment. It was wonderful to have you along for the ride. Extra thanks to my TeachWrite Facebook Group family. Confetti for all, especially my Wednesday night writing group pals.

This final #SOLC19 post would not be complete without a poem. Signing off — until Tuesday — with my acrostic poem from last year.

Giving Thanks For Young Poets #PoetryFriday

Happy Poetry Friday, everyone! Our hostess this week is Irene Latham and her blog, Live Your Poem, has had a gorgeous makeover. I hope you’ll visit her there!

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 10.08.26 AM

Last week I shared my poem, Brave Writer, which was inspired by my sweet Kindergarten writers. This week I’m serving up a sampler of bite-sized list poems I know you’ll have room for. These are my young writers’ first attempts at poetry — WOOT WOOT! We’ve been reading Georgia Heard’s Falling Down the Page: A Book of List Poems as well lots of list poems on Amy Ludwig VanDerwater’s Poem Farm website. These mentor texts inspired us to put pen to paper and carve up thankful list poems. Bon appetit! (Click the link below to watch a Spark video of everyone’s poem.)
