Day 20: Borrowed Line #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM

My #NaPoWriMo Poem-A-Day project is Playing With Poetry. I am tagging along with Margaret Simon, Jone MacCulloch, Molly Hogan, and Mary Lee Hahn. We will be playing with Haikubes, Magnetic Poetry, Metaphor Dice, and Paint Chip Poetry (I raided Home Depot).  I’m even throwing in nail polish color names as inspiration, just for fun! Play along, if you’d like! We are using the Twitter hashtag #playwithpoetryNPM to see what poetic mischief everyone is getting into.

“I am precious and you can preserve me to save me before I am gone” is a borrowed line from Tyler, one of Margaret Simon’s former students.

A peek into my poem and process:

• Wetlands Spring is a poem that I’ve been playing around with for a couple of years. I revisit it from time to time as I spend more time in this fascinating and fragile ecosystem.
• Wetlands vary depending on what part of the country you live in. I live in New England and my #playwithpoetry playmate Margaret Simon lives on the Bayou Teche of Louisiana. While I have not visited there yet, I can see from her posts that our wetlands are quite different. We are both inspired to write about them often. In surfing around her wonderful blog, Reflections on the Teche, a post of hers from 2013 caught my eye — Wetlands Writing. In it, she features a lovely poem by Tyler called Song of the Wetlands.

• Tyler’s final line is powerful and poignant. I couldn’t have said it better myself, so I hope he doesn’t mind if I borrow it for my final line.
• While I borrow a line from Tyler’s poem, I could easily have borrowed one from Wonderopolis’ WOTD #2105: What Is a Vernal Pool. Are your students learning about different ecosystems and habitats? Why not try a borrowed line poem from a Wonderopolis post about them.

Day 19: List and Borrowed Line Poems #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM #PoetryFriday

It’s Poetry Friday! My dear poetry and notebook-keeping mentor, Amy Ludwig VanDerwater, is hosting the round up this week. I do hope you will visit her at The Poem Farm, and lots of other PF participants throughout the upcoming week. In addition to her sweet (and often sad) poem project about John and Betsy, Amy offers up a bit of “how to advice” for writing list poems, the form which her poem takes today. My Kindergarten poets love writing list poems, so I have been working on one, too, with different words for walking that I have been collecting.

A collaborative poem written by Margaret Simon and her students.

Yesterday my #playwithpoetry playmate Margaret Simon honored me by borrowing a line from my haiku I shared on Wednesday. (Click here to see her original post.) Today I am repaying the favor by borrowing a line from a collaborative poem she wrote with her students — “In the spring-sprinkled garden.”

I turned to one of my #playwithpoetry tools, magnetic poetry, for the rest of the poem.

A peek into my poems and process.

• I’ve been collecting words for a long time. My list poem about walking features just some of the many words for walking, one of my favorite pastimes. A favorite walk of mine and my husband’s is the nearby Emerson-Thoreau Amble. Dear friends Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson enjoyed walking together, and one of their favorite woodland walks was the 1.7 mile path that began behind Emerson’s home and ended at nearby Walden Pond.  You can read more about this walk here. The “good friends” in my poem was inspired by these famous good friends.
• Here in New England we are only just beginning to see true signs of spring in our gardens. “Sprinkled” is the perfect way to describe the hints of color beginning to crop up here and there.
• The photo in my spring poem is of a long, narrow garden bed that runs alongside my driveway. It makes me happy when I pull in and see some sprinkles of color.
• When the sun is shining, and there is a light breeze blowing, the intoxicating perfume from my early spring bulbs in bloom wafts in through my open windows. It is truly delicious!

Day 18: Free Verse, Meta Poetry, and Poetry Memories #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM #PoemInYourPocketDay #PocketPoem

A peek into my poem and process:

• Again, I’m breaking with my NPM plan. The muse sitting on my shoulder (thank, Elizabeth Gilbert) is telling me to.
• I returned to free verse for today’s poem. This is my favorite form to write in.
• My poem is a meta poem — a poem about poetry!
• Today is Poem In Your Pocket Day! This day always leads me to think of the poetry I’ve committed to memory over my lifetime. The first I recall learning was Christina Rossetti’s Who Has Seen the Wind. (You can read the text here.) This was a favorite of my mother’s. The second was Longfellow’s The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, which I now see is actually The Landlord’s Tale. (You can read the text here.) The entire 4th Grade memorized this classic poem and recited it at a closing celebration of our study of the American Revolution. Many school children here in Massachusetts are familiar with this poem, I suspect.
• Poetry impacts us all in different ways, with no two poems having the same effect on us. This can change from day to day depending on where we are in life. I’ve tried to capture those feelings and emotions.

A peek into my poem and process. Let’s get meta!

• So I’m not very good at following my own directions. None of my #playwithpoetry tools inspired today’s haiku! An earlier version of this poem popped up in my Facebook feed this morning, as I had shared it for Haiku Day last year. I’m on my way to Walden Pond this afternoon, so I couldn’t resist revisiting the poem!
• I originally wrote this as a haiku in 2017 and later added two additional responsive, reflective lines to create a tanka. You can read that original post here.
• Inspired by one of my poetry writing mentors, Margaret Simon, I have begun to add the word “draft” after all of my work. Another writing mentor, fellow Kindergarten teacher Kelsey Corter, noticed this change and commented to me (something to the effect of) that it made my poems feel alive, because they could grow and change. Time for this little haiku to evolve!
• Changes, all in the first line, include:
  • specifically mentioning which body of water — Walden (Pond)
  • more accurately referring to the “sunlight stars shimmering” ON the water rather than AT the water.
  • referencing the possible source of the water in Walden Pond , which is actually a lake!

A peek into my poem and process:

• The world watched with horror and sadness yesterday as the magnificent and beloved Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris burned for hours on end. I visited there in January 1986 while studying abroad my junior year in college. While that was 33 years ago, and I have not managed to track down my photos as of yet, the memory of that cold winter day, with the wind blowing off the Seine, will linger indelibly in my memory.
• I again turned to Word Swag to create my final poetic image. There were many photos of Notre Dame to select from. I opted for a calm, peaceful, and contemplative indoor image rather than an iconic outdoor shot of the now painfully disfigured grand dame.
• When rolling the dice to select a text layout, the final selection appeared to show my words drifting upwards to the heavens, sadly reminiscent of the history that drifted upwards with the flames.
• My poem is in the skinny form — 11 lines, 1st and 11th identical phrases, 2nd, 6th, and 10th repeating, all lines apart from 1 and 11 individual words. More details about this form can be found here.

A peek into my poem and process:

• We are in the process of selecting fun paint colors for several rooms of our house. I’ve had the Benjamin Moore Historical Colors leaflet all winter and am drawn to the shades with references to our local history. My dining room is about to become Concord Ivory! This lead me to…
• Today is Patriot’s Day here in Massachusetts. The Stow Minutemen re-enactors group should have passed through my village (Maynard) about an hour ago on their way to the battle at Concord’s North Bridge, but is POURING outside with a flood advisory just posted. We didn’t hear their drums or muskets firing off as usual, so we are thinking they may have aborted their march and opted for a van ride to the events.
• I’ve noticed my #playwithpoetry playmate, Margaret Simon, uses Word Swag often, so I decided to give that a go today instead of my usual Canva. I put the word “rain” in the search field and came up with some lovely rain drops. Thanks for the inspiration, Margaret!

Day 14: Progressive Poem is Here! #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM #ProgressivePoem

Taking a one day hiatus from #playwithpoetry to focus on the Progressive Poem. A little senryu to kick things off.

On April 1, the Poetry Friday family launched the 7th annual Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem organized by author/poet, Irene Latham. Many of us have signed up to provide a line for the 2019 poem. Now it is my turn!

Author/poet Matt Forrest Esenwine kicked things off with some familiar “found” phrases in song lyrics merged to get us going. The trend stuck and here we are, 14 days in, ready to soar. Doraine made a move yesterday for some action. HUZZAH! I was going to do the exact same thing, but in a different direction. I was going to have us “make the wish to swim away with the fish,” (from Miley Cyrus’ “Malibu,”), but instead Doraine sent us soaring up into the sky. So…what better way to get a piece of the sky than to fly like an eagle. Cue the Steve Miller Band! (Click here to listen in.) I used to work at an outdoor performing arts center handling publicity and the press at concerts, and Steve Miller was always a favorite.

Endless summer; I can see for miles…
Fun, fun, fun – and the whole world smiles.
No time for school- just time to play,
we swim the laughin’ sea each and every day.

You had only to rise, lean from your window,
the curtain opens on a portrait of today.
Kodachrome greens, dazzling blue,

Day 13: Magnetic Poetry #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM

My #NaPoWriMo Poem-A-Day project is Playing With Poetry. I am tagging along with Margaret Simon, Jone MacCulloch, Molly Hogan, and Mary Lee Hahn. We will be playing with Haikubes, Magnetic Poetry, Metaphor Dice, and Paint Chip Poetry (I raided Home Depot).  I’m even throwing in nail polish color names as inspiration, just for fun! Play along, if you’d like! We are using the Twitter hashtag #playwithpoetryNPM to see what poetic mischief everyone is getting into.

These four words spoke to me last night as I began the play. I’m on spring break now, so I’m excited to play even more over the next nine days!

A peek into my poem and process:

• Every spring I can’t wait for it to be warm enough to sleep with a window open. I always feel like I sleep better with fresh air gently streaming in and out.
• The open window brings the outside in and beckons for me to go out, which is most welcome after a long cold winter here in New England.
• To prepare, I wrote in my NPM project notebook the things that an open spring window let’s me hear, smell, and see that a closed winter window does not allow. The initial list was long, but as I wrote, what seemed to be the most important items floated to the top.

On April 1, the Poetry Friday family launched the 7th annual Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem organized by author/poet, Irene Latham. (Click here to learn more.) Many of us have signed up to provide a line for the 2019 poem. Author/poet Matt Forrest Esenwine kicked things off with some familiar “found” phrases merged to get us going. Today’s line comes from Doraine Bennett. You can find her line here. She’s sending us up into the sky today. Participants are having fun combining two found phrases in favorite song lyrics. I’m excited to provide the 14th line tomorrow on Sunday, April 14th. I hope you’ll join us to see what happens! Here’s the itinerary for the rest of the poem.

Day 12: Haikubes #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM #PoetryFriday

It’s Poetry Friday! The ever-gracious Irene Latham is hosting the round up this week. I do hope you will visit her and lots of other PF participants throughout the upcoming week.

This is the state of my dining room table during National Poetry Month 12 days in. Oh my! I’m on spring break next week, so I can’t wait to see what it looks like after that. I don’t think we will be eating here until May 1!

The possibilities are seemingly endless and a tad quirky at times.  I’m having fun messing around with my new set of Haikubes. The fun thing is that they can be used to generate haiku and tanka, but sometimes words will jump up from the table at me and trigger an idea for free verse or some other form.

A peek into my poem and process:

• I originally penned the alliterative poem-ish part of this piece prior to the project beginning, planning to use it on opening day. It got pushed to the side in all the excitement and has finally resurfaced for Poetry Friday.
• My idea for this post came from sharing with my Wednesday Night Teach Write writing accountability group the madness spreading across our dining room table. (Shout out to you, Jen, Michelle, Tracy, Daven, Andy, and Jennifer!)
• The notebook image from Canva seemed perfect for conveying the playful work-in-progress nature of writing.

Play along, if you’d like! We are using the Twitter hashtag #playwithpoetryNPM to see what poetic mischief everyone is getting into.

These four words — trees, sky, embracing, and warm — called out to me yesterday.

A peek into my poem and process:

• Yesterday afternoon the sun finally came out after four days of clouds. It was the first day I noticed that pop of green on the boughs of a few trees out our bedroom window. I knew I needed to write about the trees that appeared, at least to me, to be reaching out for warmth.
• This is one of the few poems for this challenge that I used just a few words to prompt my writing, rather than manipulating the words in front of me on the tools I am using for the project.
