Day 21: Paint Chip Poetry #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM

PLAYING WITH POETRY (1)

My #NaPoWriMo Poem-A-Day project is Playing With Poetry. I am tagging along with Margaret Simon, Jone MacCulloch, Molly Hogan, and Mary Lee Hahn. We will be playing with Haikubes, Magnetic Poetry, Metaphor Dice, and Paint Chip Poetry (I raided Home Depot).  I’m even throwing in nail polish color names as inspiration, just for fun! Play along, if you’d like! We are using the Twitter hashtag #playwithpoetryNPM to see what poetic mischief everyone is getting into.

Inspiration for today’s poem

The Egg Hunt

A peek into my poem and process:

  • Today’s poem celebrates two firsts for me: my first narrative poem and my first attempt at quatrain. A double Easter miracle!
  • Inspiration comes at the oddest times and places, n’est-ce pas? I was in the hardware store picking up a bag of charcoal for our grill yesterday afternoon. The paint section in the far corner of the store caught my eye. I’ve been in there so many times, but have never noticed the Benjamin Moore paint chip display! We have a proper Ben Moore paint store nearby, so we’ve never bought paint at this hardware store. I had to take a look. The purple easter egg chip caught my eye and straight away I new I needed to tell a story about that special egg. Voila! A narrative poem for Easter Sunday.
  • My family insists on some type of lemony dessert to follow up our Easter lamb. Lemon meringue pie is a favorite, although I’m trying out a Limoncello Cake this year that’s smothered with lemon curdy-mascarpone cheese-whipped cream goodness!
  • It wasn’t until I started scribbling in my notebook that my poem began to nudge me towards rhyme. The quatrain began to flow…with a little poetry midwifery, of course.

And now for….

2019 Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem

On April 1, the Poetry Friday family launched the 7th annual Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem organized by author/poet, Irene Latham. (Click here to learn more.) Many of us have signed up to provide a line for the 2019 poem. Author/poet Matt Forrest Esenwine kicked things off with some familiar “found” phrases merged to get us going. Today’s line comes from poet/artist Michelle Kogan. You may find her line here on her blog. Our little poem is now waltzing in the waves. Participants are having fun song lyrics. I was excited to provide the 14th line on April 14th. You can read it here. I hope you’ll join us to see what happens next! Here’s the itinerary for the rest of the poem.

My inspiration today is historical.

april morning rain/minutemen trudge through wet mud/freedom waits for all — Christie Wyman, 2019 (draft)

A peek into my poem and process:

  • We are in the process of selecting fun paint colors for several rooms of our house. I’ve had the Benjamin Moore Historical Colors leaflet all winter and am drawn to the shades with references to our local history. My dining room is about to become Concord Ivory! This lead me to…
  • Today is Patriot’s Day here in Massachusetts. The Stow Minutemen re-enactors group should have passed through my village (Maynard) about an hour ago on their way to the battle at Concord’s North Bridge, but is POURING outside with a flood advisory just posted. We didn’t hear their drums or muskets firing off as usual, so we are thinking they may have aborted their march and opted for a van ride to the events.
  • I’ve noticed my #playwithpoetry playmate, Margaret Simon, uses Word Swag often, so I decided to give that a go today instead of my usual Canva. I put the word “rain” in the search field and came up with some lovely rain drops. Thanks for the inspiration, Margaret!

Today’s paint chip poetry prompts for my haiku are “Curtain Call” and “Swan Song.”

Winter's Final Curtain Call

A peek into my poem and process:

  • Winter just won’t let go around New England. It’s chilly in Massachusetts today and my friends north of the border in NH and Maine got more snow the other day!
  • Winter’s insistence on not letting go got me thinking about a diva prima ballerina (in Swan Lake?) who wants just one more curtain call!
  • A quick search for “swan song” and “curtain call” miraculously turned up to color swatches!

It’s Tanka Tuesday, so here we go!

cobalt indigo royal sapphire azure cerulean teal the one hue nature rarely splashes across its canvas (1)

A peek into my poem and process:

  • In strolling through my paint chip colors, I was struck by the number of references to blue. So many blues, so little time!
  • My original thought was to create a traditional haiku — 5/7/5 and relating to nature. However, when Googling nature + blue for inspiration, I stumbled upon several articles about the rarity of blue in nature. (You can read about this phenomenon here and here!)
  • This discovery lead me to the tanka form — 5/7/5/7/7, with the extension 7/7 referring back to the seed haiku (5/7/5)
