San Fernando Sunshine or Yellow Roses? #SOLSC #SOL21

“Let’s go! We’re running out of time. You need to make a decision and I want to buy the paint soon.” Those were my husband’s parting words to me this morning as he headed out the door for the early morning grocery run.

Nearly five weeks ago, during February Vacation, the plasterer came. We’ve lived in our house for just over 15 years, and the spare bedroom we call my office is still lavender. It’s not a color we chose, but one left over from the previous owners. It took us this long — and yes, there was quite a bit of dawdling — to find someone who understands horse hair plaster. Our house was built in 1880, so repairs and updates are never that simple. But now the plastering is done, and April Vacation is just weeks away. Guess what I’ll be doing that week?

Teaching remotely this year, I’m spending more time in this room than ever. I’m over lavender. So over lavender. So today’s the day. “Dial or get out of the phone booth,” as the saying goes. Time to make a decision.

Swatches are everywhere! I’m so not good at decisions! What I do know is that I want it to be yellow. I’ve always wanted a yellow room. Not sure why, but that’s where I’m at.

So I’m down to the final contenders — Yellow Roses, San Fernando Sunshine, or Sundance. I’m not sure which I’ll pick or how, but I better do it soon before he gets home from Trader Joe’s.

Thanks for wondering and wandering a bit with me today. And many thanks to the crew at Two Writing Teachers, and the extended SOL community, for giving us the time, space, and encouragement to live the writerly life here every Tuesday throughout the year and daily during the month of March.

  1. I love looking at those paint swatches, is that weird?? Deciding on a final color though? Forget it – I’m so indecisive! LOL. Yay that you’re finally getting to paint the room you’re spending quite a bit of time in though. I really love the idea of a yellow room; how fun! Good luck 🙂

  2. A yellow room is a decision you won’t regret. You’ll be happy just being in it! I recently wrote a slice about repainting a once yellow room of my daughter’s to a Mickey Mouse red room for my son. As empty nesters and time on our hands, a repaint a couple weeks ago was inspired by a beautiful, bright, yellow sunflower pillow. Instead of yellow walls, I selected Snowbound and am letting the pillow steal the show. I can also relate to it taking years to change a paint color. I FINALLY decided on Shitake for the living room that hasn’t been painted in 18 years. That’s next week’s project. Goodbye Celery!

  3. I know what you are going through. Decisions, decisions…at some point we need to pick colors to paint our living room and upstairs bathroom. I know you will pick the perfect color.

  4. I painted my entire house in the country the softest of yellows and LOVED it. More like swatch 323 or 324. It’s always a darker color when everything is painted. You’ll love a sun shiny office.

  5. Oh, I’m the queen of indecision when it come to paint colors. I love your finalists, especially Sundance. In fifty years of marriage, I’ve had a yellow kitchen for forty of them. Now, in our townhouse, a wonderful, soft yellow covers all the main walls. So easy to live with. Good luck with this.
