They’re back.
There was talk in the neighborhood.
I didn’t want to believe it.
I knew they would be…eventually. It was just a matter of time.
Is it a he? Or is it a she? It really doesn’t matter.
Marmota monax.
The groundhogs have returned. When I was a child we called them woodchucks. Some even refer to them as whistlepigs. It really doesn’t matter.
My husband thinks they are cute. I do not.
For hours I slaved away sowing seeds last year.
English Peas. Gone.
Lettuce. Gone.
Radishes. Gone
Parsnips…well you get it…GONE!
While I understand these creatures need to eat, there are plenty of other options for them. Our neighborhood it a bounteous buffet. Step right up and it’s all yours, rodents!
But alas, all they want are what I have planted with my own two hands.
This means war! Man the battle stations!

Sometimes nature just gets in the way! I’m battling with invasive house sparrows right now who have chased away the bluebirds. Good luck with the groundhogs.

Who knew house sparrows were invasive? What exactly are they doing, so I can be on the lookout! We certainly don’t want bluebirds chased away. 😦

Good luck! This year, I am trying a raised garden bed- it will be my Mother’s Day gift. While I don’t have a hungry groundhog, I am battling bunnies! I’ll be waiting to hear how you protect your garden.

Oh, I have a very fat groundhog, too, in Dresher. My battle is mostly with the bunnies that love the flowers I plant. Lat year, my daisies and zinnias were headless in a matter of days. I have tried placing dog hair from my Corgis in the gardens. It doesn’t deter them. Please let me know if you discover a way to discourage hungry critters!

Oh, no! After diligent work in your garden, it must be disheartening to have the groundhogs chomping at your vegetable garden, Christie. I have slugs who like my plants.

And I’m wondering how one mans the battle stations against a groundhog! We’ll be waiting for Part II and your triumphant victory. I want your vegetables to win this year.
