My #NaPoWriMo Poem-A-Day project is Playing With Poetry. I am tagging along with Margaret Simon, Jone MacCulloch, Molly Hogan, and Mary Lee Hahn. We will be playing with Haikubes, Magnetic Poetry, Metaphor Dice, and Paint Chip Poetry (I raided Home Depot). I’m even throwing in nail polish color names as inspiration, just for fun! Play along, if you’d like! We are using the Twitter hashtag #playwithpoetryNPM to see what poetic mischief everyone is getting into.
A peek into my poem and process:
- Every day for the last two weeks I’ve looked to see if the Great Blue Heron that hangs out in a wetlands area I pass on the way to school has returned. Finally, on Tuesday, I thought I saw him. It’s hard to get a good look as it’s a narrow passage over a stone bridge. How would I explain that to a police officer! Wednesday I was 99.9% certain and then this morning — BOOM! — there he was!
- Today’s poem is a list poem. To create it, I sketched out what is striking to me about herons and did a little surfing for descriptors.
