Day 30: Free Verse #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM #SOL19

 

This is it! It’s the last day of National Poetry Month. My #NaPoWriMo Poem-A-Day project has been Playing With Poetry. I tagged along with Margaret Simon, Jone MacCulloch, Molly Hogan, and Mary Lee Hahn. We played with Haikubes, Magnetic Poetry (magnets and online), Metaphor Dice, and Paint Chip Poetry.  I even threw in nail polish color names as inspiration, just for fun!

A peek into my poem and process:

• It’s been a long 61 straight days of writing and sharing. Sharing is the big piece. I write daily all year long, but for me. Not for anyone else.
• My journal and notebook are brimming with ideas for future Slices on Tuesdays and Poetry Fridays. See you soon!

We will be playing with Haikubes, Magnetic Poetry, Metaphor Dice, and Paint Chip Poetry (I raided Home Depot).  I’m even throwing in nail polish color names as inspiration, just for fun! Play along, if you’d like! We are using the Twitter hashtag #playwithpoetryNPM to see what poetic mischief everyone is getting into.

A peek into my poem and process:

• My inspiration tonight came from two Haikubes I spotted in the same storage baggie — “moonlight” and “whispers.”

• They made me think of all the time I’ve spent writing a poem daily this month, sometimes into the wee hours for the next day.
• Just one more day to go in this month-long challenge. The moon is beginning to rise.

A peek into my poem and process:

• We are in a weather pattern I am ready to be done with — clouds, rain, and cooler-than-I’d-like temperatures.

• I’m snug as a bug under a lovely fleece blanket, so am using online magnetic poetry rather than crawling out to use my magnets scattered across the dining room table.
• Creating these magnetic poems is a bit like making a flower arrangement with what you have in your garden. You notice what’s available, gather up what speaks to you, and arrange them in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

• Today’s poem was created with magnetic poetry online. Mary Lee Hahn’s post on Wednesday tipped me off to this fun find. I had purchased the Poet Kit, but didn’t realize there were others, including a Nature Poet Kit.
• My writing notebook — separate from my writing journal where morning and evening pages happen — is filled with all sorts of poetry seeds. Some grow faster than others, especially if they are nurtured over time.

It’s Poetry Friday! My dear poetry pal and fellow Wonderopolis Lead Ambassador, Carol Varsalona, is hosting the round up this week. • Lately I have been trying to write more poetry to use with my students. Why not, right? We love to take nature walks so I wrote this one just for them. It’s perfect for Earth Day week, too!

• Every day for the last two weeks I’ve looked to see if the Great Blue Heron that hangs out in a wetlands area I pass on the way to school has returned. Finally, on Tuesday, I thought I saw him. It’s hard to get a good look as it’s a narrow passage over a stone bridge. How would I explain that to a police officer! Wednesday I was 99.9% certain and then this morning — BOOM! — there he was!
• Today’s poem is a list poem. To create it, I sketched out what is striking to me about herons and did a little surfing for descriptors.

A peek into my poem and process:

• We have a tulip that’s a newcomer in our garden this spring. I can’t remember her name, but she’s a stunner. I love how rose-like the layers of petals are. I’ve been wanting to write about her since she made her first appearance here the other day.
• Have you ever tried Poem Generator online? I noticed a few folks using it to drum up a bit of inspiration, so I thought I’d give it a try. I selected the Haiku option and ran word choices through a few times. I didn’t love (or even like, for that matter) any of them in their entirety, but the last one created a phrase I thought was worth hanging on to — “at the perfect sky.”

A peek into my poem and process:

• I’m obsessed with cardinals. While they are common to our area of the northeast, I don’t see them every day. This makes my rare sightings that more magical.
• Yesterday, after a very challenging day, one appeared outside my classroom as I sat picking up the pieces of the afternoon. His song (bright red, so I know it’s a he) drifting through my classroom window lifted my mood instantly.
• Today’s poem is in the tanka form — haiku (5/7/5) with 2 bonus 7/7 lines referring back on the first three.
• I have yet to take a really good photo of a cardinal, so for now I’ll rely on a great shot in Word Swag.

wood frog eggs + warm weather = backstroke

A peek into my poem and process:

• Today’s poem is an equation poem. We’ve been enjoying Laura Purdie Salas’ new book, Snowman – Cold = Puddle: Spring Equations in our classroom this spring. We’ve even been trying our hand at our own equation poems. You can read more about Laura, her book, and this fun form here. (P.S. I’m excited to present at NCTE in Baltimore with Laura at a Wonderopolis-sponsored poetry roundtable! I hope you’ll come and see us!)
• Last week we were on April Vacation. Our biologist-in-residence delayed giving us the wood frog eggs we are to head-start in our classroom, because she didn’t want them to hatch while we were away. She kept them in a safe trap in the vernal pool on our campus until we returned.
• Last night our science coordinator sent us an UH-OH email saying it was so warm last week and over the weekend, that the eggs hatched! Our poor biologist had to gather up tadpoles from the vernal pool in her gorgeous hip waders. That must have been like herding cats! The subject line in the email read: “Warm Weather Plus Wood Frog Eggs Equals…” I couldn’t resist using it in an equation poem!

Day 21: Paint Chip Poetry #NaPoWriMo #playwithpoetryNPM

My #NaPoWriMo Poem-A-Day project is Playing With Poetry. I am tagging along with Margaret Simon, Jone MacCulloch, Molly Hogan, and Mary Lee Hahn. We will be playing with Haikubes, Magnetic Poetry, Metaphor Dice, and Paint Chip Poetry (I raided Home Depot).  I’m even throwing in nail polish color names as inspiration, just for fun! Play along, if you’d like! We are using the Twitter hashtag #playwithpoetryNPM to see what poetic mischief everyone is getting into.

Inspiration for today’s poem

A peek into my poem and process:

• Today’s poem celebrates two firsts for me: my first narrative poem and my first attempt at quatrain. A double Easter miracle!
• Inspiration comes at the oddest times and places, n’est-ce pas? I was in the hardware store picking up a bag of charcoal for our grill yesterday afternoon. The paint section in the far corner of the store caught my eye. I’ve been in there so many times, but have never noticed the Benjamin Moore paint chip display! We have a proper Ben Moore paint store nearby, so we’ve never bought paint at this hardware store. I had to take a look. The purple easter egg chip caught my eye and straight away I new I needed to tell a story about that special egg. Voila! A narrative poem for Easter Sunday.
• My family insists on some type of lemony dessert to follow up our Easter lamb. Lemon meringue pie is a favorite, although I’m trying out a Limoncello Cake this year that’s smothered with lemon curdy-mascarpone cheese-whipped cream goodness!
• It wasn’t until I started scribbling in my notebook that my poem began to nudge me towards rhyme. The quatrain began to flow…with a little poetry midwifery, of course.

On April 1, the Poetry Friday family launched the 7th annual Kidlitosphere Progressive Poem organized by author/poet, Irene Latham. (Click here to learn more.) Many of us have signed up to provide a line for the 2019 poem. Author/poet Matt Forrest Esenwine kicked things off with some familiar “found” phrases merged to get us going. Today’s line comes from poet/artist Michelle Kogan. You may find her line here on her blog. Our little poem is now waltzing in the waves. Participants are having fun song lyrics.
