Thanks for wondering and wandering a bit with me today. And many thanks to the crew at Two Writing Teachers, and the extended SOL community, for giving us the time, space, and encouragement to live the writerly life here every Tuesday throughout the year and daily during the month of March.
Yes, it has been a lonely year. Sometimes though, I think we all appreciate the good in life even more after we experience life without it. I’m hopeful that very soon we will all have much to look forward to again!

This was my first full year as an educator. I often say the same thing, it was a very lonely year. Hoping for brighter days ahead.

Gosh. I am so very sorry. What a way to begin. It will indeed be brighter, I promise! I’ve been teaching for 20 years now, so I know! 🙂

I feel such sadness in this poem, but I hope you’ll tuck it away safely and write a companion poem next year and the tone will be a complete joy. Thanks for putting into words what so many lonely teachers are feeling.

I admit, it was painful to write. I know we are all doing our best, but…

You captured the atmosphere well. I often wonder what the students will take from this time after they have grown, and what they will say when they reflect.
And thankful for this slicing community. To have found them during this time.

This was so melancholy and so familiar that my heart squeezed with each line. This is hard, and yes, this is really lonely until you see that others are feeling the same. And suddenly, it doesn’t feel so much so. Thanks for this lovely heartfelt poem.

I read this several times to savor the craft. It was written from the heart, to be sure. I hope less lonely times are ahead for all of us.

Yes indeed a sad poem that captures in a few short lines the emptiness of everything for you this past year. I especially like the lines, without laughter, questions, friendships, shoelaces, joy’ that sum up being with students.
